What was supposed to be a regional youth summit in Paramaribo Suriname last week; didn’t exactly turn out that way; due to a poor turnout of leaders. Caricom youth ambassadors, representing some 9 million youth in the Caribbean community met in Suriname to “finalize a report on the challenges and opportunities for youth in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.” However, only 3 leaders attended the conference. They were Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo, host President Runaldo Venetian of Suriname and CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica. The entire Corps of Regional youth ambassadors present at the summit didn’t take the leaders, “no show”, too lightly and staged a 9 minute demonstration against the absence of the majority of heads of government – one minute each for every million young people of the region. Belize Caricom Youth ambassadors Kera Bowen and Dylan Williams attended the summit with Youth minister Elvin Penner. They arrived back in Belize yesterday and held a press conference updating the media on what happened in Suriname. We spoke with Bowen today who shared the disappointment of her fellow ambassadors. According to minister of youth Penner, PM Barrow did not attend the meeting due to other commitments.
